How do you decide who you write to?
This is a common question from people both in the hobby and those who are not in the hobby. How do you decide who you write to?
I write to people that inspire me, entertain me, or have some how shaped the world that I live in. Don't you run out of people to write to? No! The possibilities are really endless
Think about this for a moment. Lets say you are a sports fan. Think about all the players that are playing the game today. Not just in the major leagues, but you also have all the minor league players. Its sometimes easier to get guys before they are superstars at the big league level. Hundreds and hundreds of players. Now, think about all the players that have played the game before the current crop of players. Now you are talking THOUSANDS of players from the past. Lets take it one step farther. Umpires play a big part of the game. If you keep going farther, what about general managers or front office personnel? They help build the teams you enjoy watching. Basically, you just need to broaden you scope of thinking when it comes to people to write to. There are more people to write to than just the top tier athletes. With that said, we talked about just baseball and we have thousands of people we could write too. Think about adding football, basketball, hockey into the mix. That is just the four major sports.
What about other sports. The Olympics, professional wrestling and mixed martial arts, auto-racing, soccer, and this is just sports we are talking about. The list goes on and on of people to write to.
It doesn't stop there. Love movies and television? Take that same scope of thinking we did with the sports and now apply it to entertainment. Think of all the people other than the main actors that make movie and television magic happen. All the supporting actors, the character actors, voice over talent. You also have the writers, the directors, producers. All these people make the shows and films happen.
One of my favorite subjects is history. I love doing the research when it comes to writing to people of history. It gives me the opportunity to learn about events that have happened in the world. Events that have shaped or even changed the world. Ordinary people that might have done extraordinary things. While some people might not consider some of these people celebrities and wonder why you would collect signatures from these people, I like to never question why people collect what they collect. It is a personal preference and it people find it interesting, then I say WHY NOT!!!
I will give you an example. I am fascinated by the events surrounding the John F. Kennedy assassination. It is one of those events that defined a generation. I write to anyone I can find that is somehow connected to the events surrounding the events around November of 1963. Why you ask? Those events are a part of world history. I write to those people associated with those events because they were there. They lived history. They have a unique story to share and it also gives me a chance to learn about history.
There many people that invented the things we use, are the first to accomplish something, the last living member of a certain group, and so many other options on people to write to. There are truly endless possibilities if you think a little outside the box.
This is why I love this hobby. There is always something new to discover and someone new to write too.
